Grand National Entries 2022
The 2022 Grand National
The 2022 Grand National promises to be a superb renewal with entries including two previous Aintree Grand National winners (Tiger Roll and Minella Times), two Irish National winners (Burrows Saint and Freewheelin Dylan), three Welsh National winners (Elegant Escape, Potters Corner and Secret Reprieve) and the most recent winner of the Scottish National (Mighty Thunder).
If you add in some of the horses previously placed in the Grand National (Any Second Now, Blaklion and Anibale Fly) and former Cheltenham Festival winners such as Chantry House, Easysland, Galvin, Mount Ida, Santini and Samcro and we have the prospect of a crackerjack race at Aintree in April 2022.

Facts and Figures based on entries for the 2022 Grand National
- Two previous Grand National winning horses have been entered for the 2022 race: Tiger Roll (2018 and 2019) and Minella Times (2021)
- As well as the two previous Grand National winners, three other horses have won alternative races over the Grand National course: Blaklion (2017 Becher Chase), Mac Tottie (2021 Grand Sefton) and Snow Leopardess (2021 Becher Chase)
- Leading owner JP McManus has won the Grand National twice, in 2010 with Don't Push It (ridden by AP McCoy) and 2021 with Minella Times (ridden by Rachael Blackmore). McManus has twelve of the 107 entries for 2022. That works out at 11% of the total number of the horses entered!
- JP McManus' twelve entries are split between eleven different trainers
- 53 (49.5%) of the 107 entries are from trainers based in Ireland
- Ten of the first eleven horses across the line last year were trained in Ireland
- Fifteen horses completed the course in last year's Grand National and of those fifteen, nine have been entered again for 2022. They are: Minella Times (1st), Any Second Now (3rd), Burrows Saint (4th), Farclas (5th), Blaklion (6th), Discorama (7th), Jett (8th), Alpha Des Obeaux (11th) and Class Conti (15th)
- Despite radically cutting back on their horses in training, three time Grand National winning owners, Gigginstown House Stud, have 14 entries (13%) in the 2022 Grand National. The famous Gigginstown colours have previously won the National with Rule The World (2016) and Tiger Roll in 2018 and 2019
- Gordon Elliott (19) and Willie Mullins (8) are by far the two trainers with the most horses numerically entered in the 2022 Grand National. Between them they have over 25% of the total field!
- The familiar green, white and yellow silks of recently deceased owner Trevor Hemmings have been carried to victory three times in the Grand National: Hedgehunter in 2005, Ballabriggs in 2011 and Many Clouds in 2015. The Hemmings colours could be carried in 2022 by Cloth Cap, Cloudy Glen and Deise Aba
- The last six winners of the Grand National have been aged eight or nine. From the 2022 entries the number of each age horses entered is as follows: 7yo 4 (4%), 8yo 26 (24%), 9yo 33 (31%), 10yo 29 (27%), 11yo 6 (6%), 12yo 8 (7%) and one thirteen-year-old (Blaklion)
- The actual weights that each horse will be allotted will be published later this month. Based on the horses entered and their current official rating, Gordon Elliott's Galvin would be the top-rated horse in the field on a mark of 167.
- Over the last five years the lowest official rating that has made it into the final field for the Grand National has been as follows: 2021 = 145, 2019 = 142, 2018 = 142, 2017 = 143, 2016 = 145. These figures would suggest that if your long-range fancy currently has a rating of under 140 you may want to reconsider!
